Innovative model illustrates Sehgal Foundation’s approach to rural development
Earlier this year, we shared the exciting news that the Government of Rajasthan agreed to replicate Sehgal Foundation’s smart-classroom model, part of the Transform Lives one school at a time program, at twenty government schools. These fun and modern classrooms, which combine whimsical designs with modern technology, have been a huge hit in the region, drawing rave reviews from students, teachers, parents, and administrators. Now many hundreds more schoolchildren will be “on board” for a learning experience for which they could previously only dream.
The smart-classroom model demonstrates Sehgal Foundation’s bottom-up approach to helping communities across rural India create better opportunities for themselves. You may wonder: How does such an idea lead to action and become a reality—first in one village and then in many more?
As with all Sehgal Foundation initiatives, it starts and ends with the community. From initial discussions to completion and follow-up, working closely with local stakeholders throughout the process ensures their ownership of the project and its sustainability in the long term. Funding support also comes from the community, usually in a shared arrangement with Sehgal Foundation and/or an outside donor. To truly create transformational change across rural India, many more partners are needed (from government, businesses, and individual donors) to bring smart classrooms and other innovative programs to the thousands of villages that so desperately need them. With the support of dedicated, generous philanthropic partners, Sehgal Foundation teams can expand Transform Lives one school at a time, including many more smart classrooms, and see India’s rural schools finally “take flight.”
