The World Food Prize Foundation partners closely with Sehgal Foundation in Gurugram with the Borlaug-Ruan International Internship program. This prestigious program provides high school students with an eight-week hands-on experience working with world-renowned scientists and policymakers at leading research centers around the globe in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Students participate in original research projects with acclaimed international scientists while getting a firsthand view of pressing food security issues and nutritional problems in poverty-stricken areas of the developing world. Sehgal Foundation has hosted nine Borlaug-Ruan interns since 2011.
Nick Battles, a 2017 Borlaug-Ruan Intern, said of his experience, “Spending two months in India changed my life. It was the best opportunity to grow as a person that I have ever had . . . I learned more about agriculture throughout my time in India than in my entire life previously. That revelation alone has altered my goals in the best way possible . . .I know I am capable, competent, motivated, and more optimistic than ever before that I, myself, can have a positive impact on the world.”
Other recent internships include University of Iowa Winterim (Dec–Jan) students taking part in a continuous study on groundwater salinity; an Iowa State intern, Natasha Hill, working on Understanding Rural Leadership in Selected Villages of Nuh: Addressing Trends and Challenges; a Drake University student, Ashwin Sinha, raising funds for his Worksheets for Water initiative for implementing a rainwater harvesting system in a village and work with Life Skills Education students.
