Naushad Ali, school principal, Pathrali Government Middle School, is pleased with the increased enrollments in the school after the school was transformed under the CSR project, HDFC Parivartan, implemented by S M Sehgal Foundation. He proudly mentions the fifty-plus new admissions, which include a few children from private schools who have migrated back to the government middle school.
Pathrali School now shines on many fronts—with proactive teachers, a committed panchayat, an active school management committee, and an unmatched zeal that paves the way for the school’s betterment.
Situated in Ferozepur Jhirka block of Nuh district, Haryana, the village has a total population of about 2,200. The middle school caters to all school-going children, including some from neighboring villages. HDFC Parivartan project began in 2021, and a village development committee (VDC) was formed with twenty-four active members who helped in the selection of project intervention beneficiaries and also supported the implementation of interventions. The VDC wanted to do something for the government middle school where basic facilities, such as toilets, drinking water stations, etc., were not available, and with such barriers, girls especially considered coming to school as a waste of time. Without a proper environment, attendance and learning both suffered.
The VDC members schoolteachers, and the School Management Committee were on board for the transformation work in their school. In 2022, school transformation work included construction of separate sanitation unit (Swachta Vahini) for boys and girls. A science lab was set up where children were given assorted opportunities to learn and experiment. Smart classes enabled children to acquire digital skills, a revamped library opened access to a world of new learning through course books and other reading materials, and a drinking water station provided access to safe drinking water, equipping the school with the critical basic amenities and laying a foundation for many more schoolchildren to receive a good education.
